Where Are We
Our Bed and Breakfast, El Picadero, is set midway between the coast and the interior provinces of Malaga. We are nestled at the foot of the Sierra del Hacho, which lies to the north of the Málaga river valley, 35km from the provincial capital and 590m above sea level.
The surrounding area has a rich history with the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs all having an influence on the area. It can be seen all around, particularly in the architecture of the towns and villages. In Alora, the nearest town, the castle sits proudly on a hill at the far end of the town and is recognised as one of the nation’s National monuments, but it is only one of the many pieces of ancient architecture that can be visited in the area.
El Picadero is at the heart of this beautiful area which includes the nature reserve at El Chorro, home to several endangered species and the breathtaking El Camino del Rey (King’s Path) which clings 150m up the side of the mountain before winding its way through to the dam above the lakes with their outstanding panorama of pine forests around the blue waters.
The whole area offers wonderful opportunities for relaxation, walking, bird watching, climbing and photography, as well as a wide range of more active pursuits such as biking, climbing, riding and water sports. The National Park, Parque Natural de Ardales, El Torcal de Antequerra, the Sierra de las Nieves and numerous picturesque villages, all add to the endless attractions, which with the beauty of our scenery, the ideal climate and the hospitality of the people will enchant visitors.
Alora has a population of c15,000 and is well provided with shops, restaurants and places of interest. It is home to a multi-cultural and multi-national community that are eager to offer a warm and friendly welcome to holidaymakers from all over the world. If, however, you miss the hustle and bustle of a more cosmopolitan lifestyle, Malaga and the coastal regions are only a 40 minute drive, or train journey from Alora. Malaga is a superb shopping centre with many supermarkets and hypermarkets that offer everything from custom-made Spanish produce to everything that you buy in the High Street at home – but at vastly reduced prices!
Whether you are looking for property, have a set holiday agenda or you just wish to relax and take it easy, you will not be disappointed with your vacation with us, at El Picadero. The area is filled with colour, contrast, cheer, and character and once you have enjoyed one stay here you will be back again and again.
